Server HTTP Response Monitoring Now in AuthorityLabs

Here at AuthorityLabs, we monitor SERP data for a lot of URLs. When someone adds a domain or URL to track, they are expecting it to respond correctly when accessed by users and search engines. In some cases, there may be a typo, incorrect TLD, or site issue that results in a response other than what is expected. Incorrect responses could cause issues with your ranking data. In order to help report and troubleshoot these issues, we’ve added a response indicator to the dashboard. This indicator is a small color coded box next to your tracked domain or URL.

Response Indicator

If the indicator is green, the URL appears to be responding correctly. If there is a red indicator, we would recommend looking into possible issues with the URL. Hover over the indicator and you will see a tooltip with more information. For example, is currently responding with a 302 and redirects to We see that as a problem and report it accordingly. It should be a 301 redirect, which we would recognize and report with a green indicator. 302 response

This feature will be evolving and if anyone has input on how they would like to see this reporting, we’re all ears.

Grouping and Syncing Domains on Authority Labs

Grouping and Syncing are two great features that have been released with our new interface. These are options that are especially helpful for accounts with multiple domains. Grouping is used to organize the domains, while Syncing is used for concatenating keywords across more than one domain.

Grouping Domains

Grouping domains will allow you to perform actions to multiple domains in that group. You can group domains together by clicking the check box next to the domains. Select two or more domains and you will see the domain actions panel on the left of your screen. Check out our support page for a full video tutorial on how to group domains.

You will have the option to Group, Ungroup or Delete those domains. Click “Group” and those domains will then be lumped together on the dashboard from then on. You also have the option to name the group. I named mine “Shopping”, and it’s as simple as that.

Syncing Domains

After grouping your domains you have the option to sync them. When the domains are synced so are the keywords. So anytime you add or delete keywords in a synced group it will be reflected in each domain in that group. Check out our support page for a full video tutorial on how to sync domains.

NOTE: To unsync your domains click on the syncing button again so that it turns from green to grey.

An awesome aspect of syncing a group is that you get to compare the domains in the group. This comes in handy when you’re trying the track out a domain preforms in different city.

To navigate to this option just click on the group name.

Here I am able to compare keywords for Olive Garden in Orlando, Phoenix and other cities or zip codes. But, you can also compare competing domains with this option, as long as they are in the same synced group.

How These Options Can Help You

Grouping can help organize your domains, whether you use this to group similar domains, competing domains, or even the same domain in different locations. Syncing will allow you to concatenate all keywords over multiple domains. It also allows you to compare multiple keyword rankings across the domains in the group. I would highly recommend syncing and grouping some of your domains.

Instant CSV Ranking Data Exports Now Available in AuthorityLabs

One of the most requested features we have come in is the ability to expedite csv exports. We have been working for the past few months to speed up exports. Progress has been steady and apart from a few of the busiest days of the month, we have seen very short wait times for exports.

Today we are launching the ability to run a quick csv export of the data on the URL you are viewing. This allows users to click a link in the top right corner of the page to start a download of the ranking data for the date currently selected in the interface.

This will be a great feature for those just looking to compare month end data, run a current status report for clients, or a quick dump that can be pulled into other reporting tools. Give it a shot and let us know what you think!

Training Videos Released

These past few weeks have been very exciting for the AL team! With the release of the new interface and now we are excited to announce the release of a series of training videos. The videos are 1-5 minute screencasts on how to work with the new interface and more videos are on the way.

Authority Labs wants all of our customers to have all the help they need. Please let us know what you think of the videos and let us know what you need more help with. We appreciate the feedback!

Here are some of the latest topics released:

The new tutorial video list is available on the Support Page and future videos will be listed there as well. You can view all of our videos in one place on the Tutorial Videos Playlist via YouTube.

Syncing domains: A quick product update

Thanks to everyone who gave us feedback on the syncing feature. Based on your feedback we have updated the sync functionality to be a bit clearer on what exactly is happening there.

The checkboxes and sync button on a domain level was causing a lot of confusion and didn’t exactly represent the functionality. As a result, syncing has been moved to the group level and is a simple toggle switch. Green means go… or on… or in this case, sync. While gray on gray means syncing is not enabled and the group is just a regular group.

The Old Busted Joint (context):

  1. Click checkboxes
  2. Click Sync old-busted-sync
  3. Cross your fingers

New Hotness:

  1. Group your domains
  2. Click the sync icon to the left of the group name so the icon is green
    Before After
  3. Confirm, and enjoy a cool beverage in celebration.

Okay, maybe just smile a little because we also backgrounded the syncing process so that if you have a lot of keywords to sync, it doesn’t lock up your browser. However, when a sync is happening the domains in the syncing group will be unavailable until it is finished to avoid any conflicts.

Thanks again for the feedback, and as always, if you have issues or feedback click the support link in the app and let us know.

AuthorityLabs 3.0 is Here!

Since the complete rewrite of AuthorityLabs about a year ago, we have been tirelessly at work talking to our users, and more importantly, listening.

We took your feedback and improved the interactions that are most important to you and the workflow associated with keeping an eye on your most critical search engine ranking data.

Our overall goal was to eliminate the confusion and friction in getting around the site and get you access to the data you need more easily. To do this, we took a three tiered approach:

  1. Simplify the visual presentation and workflow
  2. Eliminate contextual disconnect
  3. Provide shortcuts to get where you need to go more quickly

If you don’t want the full story (which I can’t believe you don’t) you can skip to the end for the bullet points.

The first thing you will undoubtably notice, is the site’s overall facelift. This is not purely cosmetic, but rather a foundation based on clean lines and flexibility. We have consolidated all of the site’s navigation into one area. The icon-based navigation items are contextual to where you are on the site and provide a quick visual recognition for things you can do. No more searching for the right button.

This facelift also has some hidden gems in it. First of all, it’s responsive on most sized screens from tablet to HD monitors. Given the extent of data it’s currently not fully responsive on phones yet, but maybe soon.

Speaking of icons (and responsive) we’ve swapped out almost all of the image icons for text icons. These icons are not only visually stunning, but more accurately representative of the functions they represent. Thanks to Dave Gandy ( and his FontAwesome project ( for an amazingly easy icon strategy.

Part of the process of simplification, was reducing the friction in switching domains and accounts. We’ve added contextual navigation links that allow you to see a list of your domains and accounts from every page. No more dashboard to see all of your domains, or profile to switch accounts.

Lastly, inviting users is easier than ever before. Now you don’t have to jump back and forth for create a team for your new user, you can select from an existing team or create a new one on the fly as you invite them.

Eliminate Disconnect

A major point of frustration was the disconnect between the sorting mechanism (drop down list) and the table of data. This has been eliminated by column header sorting. You can sort by nearly any data point with a single click.

Date and delta change has also been improved by linking them in a data header that gives you a better idea of what you are looking at on the page and what will happen if you change them.

Filtering by keyword text or by tag has been separated and improved. You can click a tag to filter and filter further by keyword text to get a more focused view of the data you need.

Overall, we’ve strived for less intrusive interactions. One of the most obvious is seen when adding tags to multiple keywords or grouping domains. The navigation appears without jumping the items you’re interacting with, but if you want to get back to the nav underneath you can just hover over it and the page adjusts. Pretty neat.

Provide Flexibility to see data how you want to see it

Syncing is back!

It’s back!!! Conspicuously absent from the last rewrite was domain syncing, but it’s back. Also, as an added bonus you can now view a comparison page of any synced domains. This is new, but has been a request by many for a long long time. :)

As part of the syncing and compare function we thought it would be nice if you could edit group names so that you can more easily identify your important groups. A group doesn’t have to be synced to be named.

And lastly, you have been asking for a way to hide data that you don’t want to focus on. So with this update, you can now customize the columns in all data views from the account level and even more fine-grained at the domain level. This will allow you to focus on just the combination of domains, volume, and type indicators you care about for each of your domains and/or clients.

What’s next

We’re not satisfied to stop here. We realize that there are still more ways that we can improve. Here’s just a small list of what’s in our current to do list:

  • Faster loading for large data sets (this is our top priority)
  • Interface API: Our goal is to give you access to the data so you can turn it into fancy reports on your own if you like
  • Multiple formats for all data views: If you don’t want to go API (or even if you do) we’re working to provide you with all data views as pdfs, csvs, and of course, API responses
  • Customizable invitation emails: So you can include a special note for that special someone
  • Filter on multiple tags: So you can drill baby drill
  • Other stuff I can’t tell you about yet. We have to have some surprises.

  • Gave the site an overall facelift
    • Cleaner lines and flexibility for future data visualization
    • Text icons from FontAwesome for icon-based navigation
    • Responsive design from tablets on up (no phones yet)
  • Improved inviting users
  • Moved sorting to column headers
  • Made date and change delta selects make more sense
  • Filter by keyword and tag is more sensible
  • Better interactions overall

     New Stuff

  • Added ability to switch domains and accounts from any page
  • Compare domains side by side
  • Name groups
  • Customize columns on all data views

I hope that these upgrades help you to be more productive and efficient and if you run into anything that needs improving, click the support link and let us know.
